Go Through Your Closets, People

We close on the new house in about a week. I've spent a lot of time getting some things done around the house. A few weeks ago, my mother-in-law was here and she graciously helped me wrap up the contents of my china cabinet and all my vases and nice dishes. I've cleaned out my drawers. My mom came over and helped me box up 50% of my kitchen and we went through the guest room closet (which has doubled as a storage closet) and sorted all of it into piles to be trashed, to be donated, and to be boxed up.

And then I stand up and look around and feel like I've hardly made a dent.

I walked into the garage to get something today and I looked around and decided that we will have to just set it on the curb or burn it all.

So much has to be boxed up. So much has to be cleaned and organized. On top of that, I want to refinish some furniture before we move. It's all very overwhelming. However, I made an agreement with myself when all of this started that I refuse to let myself shut down. I get into this really horrible cycle of getting overwhelmed to the point of sitting down and doing nothing.

I refuse.

I don't know how it will get done, but it will. Inhale and exhale. Breathe into a paper bag and try not to hyperventilate. It's Thursday which means Ellie has school which means I can get some stuff done.

Thursday plan:

Finish going through the guest room closet and drawers
Disassemble the dining room table to make room for all the boxes
Eat some M&M's
Box up all the books
Take all the framed photos down from shelves and off the walls
Sort through Ellie's closet
Drink a really, really big Diet Coke

On a positive note, I found some treasures. Many wedding gifts are still in boxes since we haven't been in a home that we've done a lot of entertaining in. There's a chip and dip server that HEATS YOUR CHIPS AND YOUR QUESO WHILE IT'S SITTING ON THE COUNTER. GOD BLESS US EVERYONE.

Also, I was going through the guest closet with Mom and I pulled out a large, unopened box from Zulily.

"Oh, I remember this..." I said. "This was a King size comforter set that I liked that was for dirt cheap. I knew it wouldn't go with my current bedroom set, but I went ahead and bought it cause it was like $50.00 and I thought I could maybe even sell it if I didn't end up using it myself. Gosh this was so long ago, I can't remember what it looks like...."

I opened the box.

We both gasped.

Go through your closets, people. It's full of treasures!

  1. YES! For our wedding we received (I believe we registered for it, even) a double warmer for serving large meals. It is in a dust-covered box in my garage, but I'm about to use it for the first time for a birthday party!

  2. It's so fun! It's like receiving the gifts all over again. Little did I know when I unwrapped some of this stuff at wedding showers that I wouldn't use it for OVER 8 YEARS. Sigh.
