120 Seconds

Some days feel longer than others. The other day, my husband came home from work and I almost immediately announced that I was going to go check the mail. He quickly offered to walk to the mailbox for me, but I enthusiastically grabbed the keys and started walking to the door. Again, in all of his sweetness, he said “Babe, I know it’s really hot out, I’ll go for you.” I never broke stride and didn’t even look back as I walked out the door saying, “No thanks, I’ve got it!”

And then I took a walk to the mailbox. A very, very slow walk to the mailbox.

So, you’re thinking maybe I was expecting an exciting package or letter. Or maybe that I needed the exercise. But you would be wrong. I just wanted to get away for 120 seconds.

Seriously. That’s how long it takes for me to walk to our mailbox and back. Two (very brief) minutes. But I wanted 120 seconds of silence. Even if it was 186 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Even if I did have to change clothes since I came back dripping with sweat. It didn’t matter. I wanted to quietly walk to the mailbox.

I absolutely love and adore being a momma. I genuinely do. But I don’t get 120 seconds of silence. I can’t even listen to calm, peaceful music in the car anymore. We are listening to Disney soundtracks or that catchy VBS CD the kids got back in June. (I love VBS. I love the music. But that CD is starting to give me a nervous twitch. I think it may need to be retired for a little while and not come back until sometime around mid-February.) As much as I adore being a momma, sometimes I need a break. I need to retreat and walk outside to the mailbox all by myself. And maybe I’ll take the long way back…. or just sit on the curb outside the house. I just came up with that idea just now. I’m definitely sitting on the curb next time he gets home from work. I’ll just sit there and sing “All to Jesus I surrender…” while I rock myself back and forth. Ten minutes of that and I’ll be ready to cook dinner.

We all need to retreat. Retreat from work, retreat from projects, retreat from the burdens and pressures we face every single day. Whether we are retreating from the mundane and the monotonous or the complicated and chaotic, The Lord made us to need Him. We need to come to Him, seek Him, and as we pour ourselves out day after day, He can pour into us day after day. We’ll run empty if we aren’t replenished.

Sister friend, do you need refreshment? Rejuvenation? A lift in your spirit? 120 seconds where no one is asking you for “more crackers, Mommy?!” Schedule a break into your week. Take a walk, have a cup of coffee, or by golly just take an ever-loving NAP! If you need some extended retreat time, some fellowship with other women, some time to worship and have a good Word poured into your soul, I invite you to join me this October 3-4 at the Houston's First Baptist Church Women’s Retreat. It’s here in town, it’s less than 48 hours, and you get to spend the night in a quiet hotel room that has lovely, clean linens that someone else will wash after you leave. Amen, sister.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” I recite that to myself when I’m getting overwhelmed. He’s the only one that can get me back where I belong. Let Jesus fill you up and refresh you. Stop your routine for just a moment, and let Him fill you with a breath of renewal.

In the meantime, I’m gonna go walk into my closet and close the door and take a few deep breaths. The retreat can’t get here soon enough!

** I was honored to be asked to write this piece for our church newsletter. I am even more honored to be a part of the planning committee for this awesome event. Seriously, if you are needing a good 24 hours of replenishment, join us. For more information, click here.**

Well, That Escalated Quickly

I have very sensitive eyebrows. I'm not sure why. But I see people sit and pluck and pluck and pluck with tweezers and I just can not do that. Every time I pluck, my eyes fill up with tears. It hurts so bad. So I don't pluck them.

This means that I get my eyebrows waxed every few weeks. It's not like a standing appointment or anything... I just find a random nail salon when I have a few minutes to myself and go in and then I'm finished and walking out in a matter of minutes.

And I wear sunglasses the rest of the day because my eyebrow area gets so, so red after I get them waxed. Some people ask me, "doesn't waxing hurt worse than tweezing?" Maybe, but at least with waxing it hurts about 6 times and then it's over. With tweezing, it hurts 42 times. And I have to hold ice cubes to my forehead in between each pluck and I just don't have time for that.

Anyways, yesterday I walked into a nail salon and asked for a brow wax. A very enthusiastic woman led me to the back room. We made small talk as she ripped my eyebrow hairs out with boiling hot wax. After it was all said and done, we had a very interesting conversation:

Me: Okay, thank you so much. This looks so much better!

Her: Okay! You are welcome!

Me: What was your name again?

Her: My name Kathleen!

Me: Well it's nice to meet you, Kathleen, I'm Jenny.

Her: Jenny? J-E-N-N-Y?

Me: Yes, that's right.

Her: Okay Jenny. I'm K-A-T-H-L-E-E-N, Kathleen!!

Me: Well it was nice to meet you. I'll see you next time, okay?

Her: Okay! I love you, Jenny! See you next time!

And I just feel like our friendship progressed really quickly.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Saturday Funnies

Want to laugh?

Here's some things that are making me giggle:

I found this gem on Pinterest. I kinda want to put it in my home.

And this one I only wish I had found on Pinterest. But, no. I did not. I found this in my own home. In my own bathroom. My husband is ever so romantic. What an encourager he is. He was so proud of himself about this. Y'all. I can't even.

And this is something from YouTube that makes me laugh so, so hard. Actual tears. I laugh so hard, I wheeze. And it's just so dumb. IT IS SO DUMB. But I dare you to watch it without laughing.

Did you wheeze? I wheezed. And snorted.

It's just silliness!

I Bought Some Shirts from Anthropologie

Anthropologie had a sale. I just couldn't resist, y'all. I don't normally buy clothes from Anthropologie because I don't believe in spending $175 on a shirt. I just don't. But when they have sales, I will browse the website and see if anything in my price range is worth my consideration.

And a few days ago, I bought 3 shirts. And today, I returned 2 of them. Let's discuss:

Item #1:  Ridgewood Tee

Okay, so this model here in this photo looks super cute in this shirt. And it looked very comfortable online. When I opened the package, I thought the shirt was super lightweight and casual and would be perfect for Fall. It had 2 big issues: The first problem is that the care label said "Hand Wash Only" and I am just not made for that. I am not gonna be hand washing my clothes, y'all. I'm just not. The second and much bigger problem, in my opinion, was the tan, leather stripes going across the shirt. While it was unique and cool, IT ALSO LOOKED AND FELT LIKE A BAND-AID. Y'all. It was like I slapped 2 giant band-aids on my shirt. I just couldn't.

This shirt is perfect and I love it and I am keeping it. I am already imagining it with all the boots in the Fall. (Can you tell I'm yearning for cooler temps?!) I thought it fit really nicely and I have so many jewelry options and I can wear it with black or brown and I am thrilled with this purchase.

This shirt was the cheapest of the three and I really loved the fabric and the weight of it. However, that top ruffle sat right on the chest area and it made me feel like ChaCha from Grease for some reason. I don't know why. But there were 3 ruffles plus the 2 ruffles on the sleeves so that's 5 ruffles and I'm curvy enough as it is and it was just more than I was willing to walk around wearing publicly. Also, the shirt was a little short and I like to wear my shirts longer. In summary, this shirt was just not all that I needed it to be.

So, today, Ellie Paige and I went to City Centre and returned the two shirts that I decided not to keep and the whole process couldn't have been easier. And since she was such a good girl, we walked over to Sweet and got a chocolate chip cookie for each of us and a Raspberry Italian Soda for me. So really, all in all, it was a delightful afternoon.

And when the temperature dips below 116 degrees, perhaps I'll wear my new shirt from Anthropologie.
